ohohohoh, you thought we only reviewed videogames here at motsdrama? (well, i don't blame you, i haven't done a non-game review since The Matrix, and i haven't done a food review since... geez, the third review on the site, the V8 Sparkling Energy+!) but no, we're here to talk about one of my favorite snacks of all time; the Town House Flipsides cracker. these were a huge part of my childhood, it was always a treat to see these sitting in the pantry. it's too bad they come in such a small box, they go so fast in my house!

so, what exactly is a Flipside? well, introduced sometime around 2008, a Flipside is a cracker that's half cracker, half pretzel. they're made by Town House crackers, and if you've ever indulged in one of their light and buttery ovals, a Flipside is basically that except the top has the crunch and texture of a pretzel. unlike most snack pretzels, however, Flipsides are VERY buttery, and this is the biggest draw to me. it adds so much to the pretzel experience, to the point where it makes me almost wish more snack pretzels had butter... almost. because as i'm sure you can imagine, paired with the salt on each cracker, these guys can get very messy very quickly. my favorite part of pretzels is that there's no residue, no cheese dust, no sticky salt, no oil, you don't need to wash your hands each time you finish eating one. Flipsides remove this aspect, which i'm not a fan of. which brings me to my next topic...

Flipsides market themselves as being "half pretzel half cracker," but its really more like they're a pretzel in the shape of a cracker. sure, the bottom has that sort of Ritz-esque texture, but you can barely taste it over the crunch of the pretzel side. now, that isn't to say this is a problem. i love the pretzel side, thats the best part about this snack. in fact, it makes me wonder what a version of the cracker that was
all pretzel would be like. the identity as half pretzel half cracker is holding it back, in my opinion. also, these aren't sold just anywhere. sorta like the V8 drink i talked about all that time ago, these are almost kind of a specialty item. maybe other parts of the world have better luck, but i've only ever seen Flipsides at Kroger, they're never sold at Aldi or god forbid a gas station, which is a huge missed opportunity. these would be SUCH a good roadtrip snack, but nope, you gotta take your ass to a grocery store if you want that.

i should also mention... i know most crackers are meant for dipping or applying toppings, but that's not my jam. i'll dabble in cheese and crackers every so often, but most of the time i'm too lazy and i just eat 'em raw. some crackers just fucking SUCK for this, if you've ever had those platters of multigrain crackers that they have at banquets or whatever, those are the absolute worst to have plain. luckily, Flipsides are already so packed with flavor that this is not an issue at all. that butter and salt goes a long way, and the extra pretzel texture crunch makes it feel more substantial than something like a Ritz cracker. it also helps it to stay together, i feel like every time i've ever opened a pack of Saltines or Ritz, they're almost always a little worse for wear. that's not the case with Flipsides! sure, sometimes you'll find them split in half, but never crumbly.

overall, Flipsides are an excellent snack that feels like the best parts of pretzels and crackers mixed together. i'd recommend giving them a shot next time you're in the market for a snack, hopefully they have them at your local grocery store!
